Getting Your First Credit Card: What You Actually Need to Know
Your first credit card isn't just a payment tool — it's the start of your credit history. Here's how to pick the right one and not mess it up.

- 1Start with a student or no-fee card — annual fees aren't worth it when you're building credit.
- 2Your credit utilization (balance ÷ limit) should stay below 30%. Below 10% is ideal.
- 3Pay the full balance every month. The interest rate (APR ~20%) will wreck any rewards you earn if you carry a balance.
- 4Never miss a payment — even one missed payment can drop your credit score significantly.
- 5Don't apply for multiple cards at once. Each application is a "hard inquiry" that temporarily lowers your score.
- 6A secured card (you deposit cash as collateral) is a great option if you're denied a regular card.
